Conditioning-Body, Mind and Bond

by Char Turner, BS, LVT, CSCC, CTDI, AKC Fit Dog Instructor

As trainer and certified canine strength and conditioning coach my priority is the dog’s wellbeing, the whole package. This naturally includes going beyond the physical goals, to nurture and condition a healthy state of mind and relationship throughout the training process. This means our dog must feel comfortable, willing and physically able to execute what we are asking them to do. And it absolutely requires that they feel safe, supported, and trusting of the human involved. That also means first and foremost that both instructor and handler/student be on board with prioritizing the dog’s emotional and mental state over human expectations and constructs of what the dog “should be able to do”.

Challenge is certainly necessary to progress. But trust, relationship, and the learning process itself are undermined if inappropriate levels of challenge, pressure, and unrealistic human expectations are in play. We must always consider the physical, mental and emotional state of the dog in front of us and be sure we are being fair and appropriate in what we ask. And above all keep them feeling safe and secure.

To do that, we meet our dog where they are and work from there. We build trust, and in turn confidence, by facilitating the learning process in appropriate steps. We communicate in a way that is consistent and clear, while being supportive and caring. This is thoughtful, purposeful and effective training. It requires planning and also flexibility to adapt in the moment if our plan is not working.

The bottom line is that Canine Conditioning = Canine Wellbeing. And that necessarily includes the whole package of Body, Mind and Bond.
